So there were some traditional festivals in the night in Nara. We enjoyed warm old lights in these festivals.
August was the month of Bon-festival. The spirits of ancestors came back home and we saw the lights to welcome them and see them off at the World Heritage Site or around there.
A lots of lights were arranged in the estate of Todaiji-temple.

Sunset. Someone whispered it seems as if I am in the heaven. |

(Daimonji-okuribi)
They burnt many bonfires that were lined with a shape of 大(dai) on the Mt.Takamado to remember ancestors. I heard this 大 is largest in Japan. It's about 109m~164m.
(Daigokuden)
The emperor administered in the 8century here and lately it was restored. Countless lights(a candle in a cup) were scattered there. People enjoyed in the costumes of Nara period. Of course they didn't have illuminations in those days.

This shrine has about 1000 lanterns like this photo and 2000 stone lanterns. They are lit twice in a year.

What a beatiful world you have there. Feels like I am in another world. Awesome.

Wow! This is such an illuminating festival! Can anyone light a candle or is the entire arrangement done by the authorities of the temple?
It must be such a fascinating experience to see the entire area brightened up in the pitch dark silent hours of the night. Thank you for your marvelous pictures, Sarah... it all does feel like heaven.
Hello Sarah!
Beautiful photos of light in darkness,an awesome scene. Lovely capture of the small boy among the cup lights,he looks as if he is in wonderland! It must be inspiring to experience this.My favourite is your header image.
Thanks for sharing.....have a great week,
Ruby
To Arti,
For cup lights, NPO organize at some places. The volunteer light candles. So anyone can light them.
For lanterns in Kasugataisya-shrine,the shrine organize. But anyone can light lanterns by paying 3000yen as 初穂料(It means that people dedicated the first grain that was harvested in that year to the shrine in old days. Instead of grain, people pay it by money now)
What a stunning collection of photos! They're all beautiful, but that vast field of lights at Daigokuden takes my breath away. I wish I could see it in real life ...
Thanks for the information, Sarah. That is very interesting to know.

So many wonderful available light photographs you show in this post, Sarah!
We have a festival of lights once a year as well in the spa gardens of our hometown, but we don't have such a beautiful temple in the background!

So much beauty comes from simple candlelight!
Hi,Sara.
